Plastic Canvas Patterns and Kits

Plastic canvas is a fun and easy way to learn the basics of needlepoint while at the same time making useful home decor items. Crafters of all ages enjoy plastic canvas projects.

Plastic canvas is a molded, rather than woven, canvas-looking material that comes in precut sheets with a medium gauge. It is typically used for place mats, cards, and craft decorations such as ornaments. Plastic canvas has a stiff feel and is not recommended for fine needlework.

Plastic canvas is available in 7, 10 and 14 count sheets and many different colors including brights, pastels and , of course, original white. The number of threads required depends on the plastic canvas counts and the type of finish you are trying to achieve. For example, 14-count canvas usually uses 2 or 3 strands of thread. Using 2 threads is easier to use but will produce a lighter coverage. Conversely, using 3 strands will typically produce a fuller and richer looking project but will be more difficult to pass through holes in the plastic canvas sheet.

Plastic canvas can be used for all sorts of things. It's great for teaching children to stitch as you don't need a frame and any little marks can be rubbed off it. As it can be cut to any shape, it's great for making small items such as fridge magnets and key rings and can also be used for mobiles and Christmas decorations. Plastic canvas can also be stitched together to make three dimensional items such as tissue boxes and spectacle cases.
