Needlepoint Fabrics Most needlepoint canvases are made of meshed cotton or linen threads. Needlepoint fabrics can be purchased by the yarn or in pre-cut packs and come in basic colors of antique brown, white and cream which are suitable for most needlepoint projects and in a variety of mesh sizes. A detailed needlepoint project may require a fine-gauge canvas of 22 thread per inch where as a rug will require a thick rug needlepoint canvas gauge of 3 threads per inch. A common needlepoint fabric gauge is 10. There are four basic type of needlepoint fabrics: Mono Canvas is sold in the largest range of gauges and consists of single threads that form a simple grid. Double or Penelope Canvas is made with pair of horizontal and vertical threads. You can work your stitches over each pair or split then for smaller stitches when you need more detail. Interlock Canvas is made of pairs of twisted vertical threads and intersects single horizontal threads. This weave makes interlock less likely to distort or fray. Rug Canvas is a sturdy canvas used for needlepoint and rug making. It is formed by two lengthwise threads twisted around each other and a pair of crosswire threads. Threads cannot be separated.
